At least 13 people have died following a tragic collapse at a mining site in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State. Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA, confirmed the deaths to reporters on Monday in Jos, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives. The incident occurred on Saturday at a mining site located near the boundaries between Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs. Dr. Riti noted that seven of those who lost their lives were from Bassa LGA.
Describing the incident as a significant tragedy, Riti stated, “These young individuals were only seeking a way to earn a living. They were working hard to support themselves and cope with the current economic challenges facing the country but, unfortunately, they met an untimely end.” He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and loved ones affected by the accident.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that most of the victims were young adults, ranging from 18 to 30 years old. This tragic event highlights the hazards faced by those working in informal mining, particularly young people who often turn to such dangerous work out of economic necessity.
