No fewer than 33 persons have been confirmed dead following a deadly cattle rustling attack in Bui District of Kebbi State, prompting a swift deployment of reinforced security operatives across the troubled area.
The attack, which occurred in Arewa Local Government Area, has thrown communities in Kebbi North Senatorial District into mourning and heightened tension, as authorities move to prevent further bloodshed.
In response to the incident, the Kebbi State Police Command announced the immediate deployment of additional personnel and operational assets to the affected communities. The reinforcements, mobilised in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, are aimed at restoring calm and forestalling further violence.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, in a statement issued Thursday, confirmed that sustained area domination patrols were ongoing in vulnerable locations.
“The Command deeply regrets the loss of thirty-three innocent lives and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the entire Arewa community,” the statement read.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, revealed that suspected Lakurawa militants stormed Bui District on February 18 to rustle cattle. The attackers were believed to have crossed into the area from Gudu Local Government Area before launching the assault.
Residents from Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal and Dan Mai Ago reportedly mobilised in response to the incursion, leading to a fatal confrontation with the heavily armed assailants.
