The Enugu State government’s new transport initiative, which includes the launch of a new transport management system, the commissioning of five modern bus terminals, and the introduction of CNG-powered buses, has been met with mixed reactions from residents. While many are celebrating the move as a welcome development, some commercial drivers fear it will negatively impact their livelihoods.
Commercial drivers, particularly those who operate inter-city routes, expressed concern that the new buses would draw away their customers. **Anthony Okoro**, a driver on the Old Park to Nsukka route, voiced his worry that the more affordable CNG buses would lead to a significant drop in his passenger numbers. He explained that he and other drivers already struggle to make a profit due to the high cost of petrol and that the new competition could make it even harder to earn a living. Another driver, **Obinna Ogbonna**, echoed these fears, noting that he and his colleagues already face low passenger turnout and often have to operate with empty vehicles. He speculated that the new bus scheme would only worsen their situation, potentially forcing them to seek employment with the government’s new service.
Conversely, students and commuters were delighted with the new initiative. **Ngozika Ekwueme**, a student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, expressed her relief, stating that commercial drivers have been overcharging passengers. She believes that the government’s intervention will rescue students and other commuters from exorbitant fares. Similarly, **Ijeoma Abada**, a honey seller, was excited about the new bus terminals and the anticipated drop in transportation costs. She calculated that the new, more affordable buses would allow her to save a significant amount of money on her daily trips to Enugu to sell her goods.
An economist, **Hillary Mbu**, commended the strategic planning behind the transport scheme but advised the state government to make the venture private sector-driven. He argued that government-managed businesses in Nigeria often struggle and that a private-sector approach would ensure the scheme’s longevity and optimal operation. Governor Mbah, who announced the launch of the new system, expressed his excitement about the initiative, highlighting its goal to bring “smarter mobility, smoother journeys, and a cleaner future” to the people of Enugu.
