Nsukka Legislative Council Suspends 12 Councilors Over Failed Coup Attempt

The Nsukka Local Government Legislative Council has suspended twelve of its members indefinitely following what has been described as a failed coup attempt against the council’s leadership.

The suspended lawmakers had reportedly staged an impeachment plot by seeking to pass a vote of no confidence against the leadership, citing several allegations. However, the move collapsed after other members rallied to defend the integrity of the legislative house.

Those suspended include:

Rt. Hon. Ugwuada Peace (Ejuona-Uwani Ward),

Deputy Majority Leader; Rt. Hon. Odoh Paul Amaechi

(Agbamere/Umabor Ward),

Chief Whip; Rt. Hon. Ugwuanyi Christian (Alor-Uno Ward),

Deputy Chief Whip; Rt. Hon. Diugwu Henry (Akaibute Ward);

Rt. Hon. Omeje Jude (Akpa/Ozzi Ward);

Rt. Hon. Okoro Chidiebere (Edem-Ani Ward);

Rt. Hon. Ezeah Ikechukwu (Ede-nta Ward);

Rt. Hon. Ogbu Hyginus (Ede-Ukwu Ward);

Rt. Hon. Ugwuanyi Francis (Ehandiagu Ward);

Rt. Hon. Eze Gideon E. (Idi/Ogbozalla Ward);

Rt. Hon. Ugwu Ugochukwu (Obukpa Ward);

Hon. Agbowo Iloabuchi Steve (Eha-ulo Ward).

The motion for their suspension was moved by Rt. Hon. Eneje Chinedu (Ibeku Ward) and seconded by Rt. Hon. Asadu Chinwendu (Ajako) of Owere/Umuoyo Ward. Moving the motion, the sponsors argued that the suspended members acted in a manner unbecoming of honourable councillors and displayed a disregard for due legislative process.

Speaking on the development, the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Ugwu Chinonso, said the affected members had “prioritized selfish interests over the welfare of their constituents.” He accused them of making excessive demands even as the council leadership was working to address genuine concerns across the wards.

According to him, the botched impeachment attempt was a deliberate attempt to “create a rift between the legislative and executive arms of government” and amounted to a mockery of the legislative process. He maintained that the council leadership was open to dialogue, but the aggrieved members chose a confrontational path that undermined stability.

Ugwu further stressed that the suspension became necessary to protect the sanctity of the legislative house and prevent further disruptions to governance at the grassroots.

The indefinite suspension has effectively altered the balance of the Nsukka Legislative Council, leaving political observers watching closely for the next chapter in what appears to be an intensifying power struggle within the local government’s legislative arm.
