Burkina Faso’s security agencies have foiled another alleged plot to assassinate Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the country’s military ruler.
Speaking on Tuesday, the nation’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, claimed that the planned attack was masterminded by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Damiba, the former head of state who was removed from power by Traoré in September 2022.
According to Sana, intelligence operatives uncovered the scheme at an advanced stage, just before it was to be carried out. He said the plot involved plans to kill the head of state and subsequently launch coordinated attacks on other strategic targets, including major institutions and prominent civilian figures.
The minister further alleged that the operation was financed from neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire. However, neither Lt Col Damiba nor officials from Côte d’Ivoire have responded to the accusations.
Since assuming power, Captain Traoré has survived at least two attempted coups while continuing to grapple with persistent jihadist violence that has displaced millions and strained national security.
Despite the challenges, the 37-year-old leader retains significant support among segments of the population and has earned wider recognition across the African continent. He has also been outspoken in his criticism of Western influence and has embraced strong pan-Africanist rhetoric.
In response to the latest threat, authorities have tightened security around government facilities and intensified border surveillance, particularly along the frontier with Côte d’Ivoire, as investigations continue.
The foiled assassination attempt adds to a series of security incidents that have marked Traoré’s rule since 2022. After seizing power by ousting Lt Col Damiba, who had governed for only a few months, Traoré has faced repeated allegations of coup plots.
Most recently, in April 2025, the government announced it had thwarted another coup involving both serving and former soldiers who were allegedly planning attacks on the presidential palace and other key locations. These developments have unfolded against the backdrop of ongoing jihadist insurgency and a deepening humanitarian crisis, further undermining stability in the country.
