—— Says the agreement reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuilding trust and ensuring sustainable development in the nation’s tertiary education sector.
The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday commenced a historic and symbolic unveiling ceremony of their renewed agreement in Abuja, marking a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s public university system for present and future generations of students.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described the unveiling as more than the end of negotiations, stressing that it represents a renewal of covenant between the government, the academic community and the future of the Nigerian child.
She noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that the decision to renew the agreement with ASUU is driven by sincerity and a clear resolve to address longstanding challenges facing public universities. “The unveiling of this agreement is not the conclusion of the negotiating process, but a renewal of trust, responsibility, accountability and shared ownership of outcomes,” Ahmad said.
She emphasized that the success of the agreement would depend on the collective commitment of all stakeholders, urging both government officials and university unions to faithfully carry out their respective roles and responsibilities.
The renewed agreement is expected to promote stability in the university system and improve learning conditions, research, and staff welfare across Nigeria’s public institutions.
