Fear Grips Ogidi as Community Leader, Another Resident Killed in Suspected Cult-Linked Attack

Residents have been thrown into deep fear following the incident, with many describing the atmosphere in the community as tense and uncertain, as people remain indoors amid worries that more attacks could occur.

Anxiety has spread across Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State after the President General of the town’s union and another resident were killed during a late-night attack on Friday.

The two victims were reportedly gunned down at the Ogidi School Field, a well-known public location within the town. The Anambra State Police Command has suggested that the killings may be connected to a reprisal attack linked to the recent arrest and killing of a suspected notorious cultist in the area.

The incident has reportedly triggered widespread panic, with residents limiting movement and staying at home due to fears of renewed violence.

Confirming the development on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, expressed the Command’s sorrow over the deaths, stating that it “deeply regrets the murder of the President General of the Ogidi community and another individual.”

Ikenga explained that the attack occurred on Friday evening, February 6, and is “allegedly connected to the recent capture and killing of a known and notorious cult figure within the community.”

He said police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene after the incident, where they secured the area and began preliminary investigations.

According to him, the Command is relying on eyewitness testimonies and other intelligence reports to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those behind it.

“The Anambra State Police Command is working with eyewitness accounts and available intelligence to track down and arrest the perpetrators,” he said.

Community sources told SaharaReporters that the death of the President General, a well-respected and influential figure in Ogidi, has intensified fear among residents, particularly due to the suspected cult-related nature of the attack.

“This is a devastating loss for the community. People are afraid because there is uncertainty about what may happen next,” a resident said, speaking anonymously for security reasons.

The police spokesperson reassured the public that security agencies are stepping up efforts to prevent any further breakdown of law and order in the area.

He emphasized that the Command is committed to ensuring justice, adding that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend those responsible for the killings.

Ikenga also appealed to residents to remain calm and assist the police by sharing credible information that could support the ongoing investigation.

“Members of the public are urged to stay calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue. Updates will be provided as developments unfold,” the statement noted.

The incident has renewed concerns over cult-related violence in parts of Anambra State, where community leaders have continued to call for stronger security interventions to address criminal activities.

As investigations progress, Ogidi remains in a state of mourning and anxiety, grappling with the loss of its leader while hoping for swift arrests and justice for the slain individuals.
