The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyelyshev, has refuted claims that Nigerians are being recruited to take part in the war in Ukraine, stressing that there is no state-backed initiative aimed at enlisting Nigerians for the conflict.
He made this clarification on Tuesday during a press briefing in Abuja, where he also spoke about current and proposed areas of military and economic collaboration between Russia and Nigeria.
Responding to questions from journalists, Ambassador Podyelyshev stated that any attempt by individuals to recruit Nigerians for the war would be illegal and unconnected to the Russian government. He added that if such information is brought forward, Russian authorities are prepared to investigate through their law enforcement agencies.
He further drew attention to existing military-technical cooperation agreements between both countries, including discussions on training Nigerian armed forces and the possible provision of Russian military equipment. According to him, some of these initiatives are already underway, while others are still being reviewed, noting that Russia is willing to expand cooperation in line with Nigeria’s interests.
The ambassador described Nigeria as a strategic partner for Russia on the African continent, emphasizing that relations with Nigeria play a significant role in shaping Russia’s engagement in West Africa. He said Nigeria has the potential to serve as a stabilising force for regional development and security.
Speaking on international affairs, Podyelyshev restated Russia’s commitment to a multipolar global system, respect for national sovereignty and cultural diversity, and opposition to unilateral dominance in global politics.
He also reaffirmed Russia’s support for African-led solutions to the continent’s challenges and its rejection of external interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations.
The briefing also covered economic and educational cooperation, including proposals for establishing a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology in Nigeria and increasing scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students to study in Russian institutions.
According to the ambassador, both countries remain focused on building a long-term strategic partnership that spans security cooperation, trade relations, and shared diplomatic objectives at the international level.
