Violence broke out across several regions of Mexico following the killing of a notorious drug cartel leader, prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to appeal to citizens for calm and vigilance. The unrest followed a security operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera, widely regarded as one of the country’s most wanted narcotics traffickers.

In a message shared on social media platform X, the president reassured the public that federal authorities were working closely with state governments to contain the situation. She emphasized that security agencies were fully coordinated nationwide and urged residents to remain composed while staying updated through official information channels.

The operation that eliminated the cartel figure triggered swift retaliation from armed groups believed to be linked to organized crime networks. In the western state of Jalisco, gunmen set vehicles ablaze and used them to barricade more than 20 roadways, including routes near Acatlán de Juárez. Images from the area showed charred cars and trucks scattered across highways, underscoring the intensity of the backlash.
The violence was not confined to a single region. Similar incidents were reported in Michoacan, Guanajuato, Puebla, and Sinaloa, where businesses were torched and key transportation routes obstructed. Authorities have since increased security deployments in affected areas in a bid to restore order and prevent further escalation.
Officials described the deceased cartel boss as a “high-priority security target,” and his killing marks one of the most significant blows against organized crime in recent years. However, the immediate wave of retaliatory attacks has heightened tensions, with law enforcement agencies remaining on high alert as they work to stabilize the affected communities.
