Abia State Governor Alex Otti strongly rebuked a journalist during a media interaction after being asked to present evidence demonstrating how his administration’s policies have improved the welfare of residents in the state.
The incident occurred on Friday during a media chat where the governor was fielding questions from reporters. A journalist who introduced himself as Chika Nwabueze asked the governor to provide verifiable data showing the measurable impact of his government’s infrastructure projects and reforms on the living standards of Abia citizens. The reporter noted that while the administration had highlighted various development initiatives, some critics believed that issues of transparency and inclusive governance still required attention.
In response, Governor Otti dismissed the question, describing it as inappropriate and ill-conceived. He challenged the journalist’s premise, questioning whether he resided in Abia and suggesting that, as a resident of Umuahia, the reporter should be able to assess developments in the state firsthand.
“This is a serious media chat,” the governor said. “We are not here to entertain opposition narratives. You cannot attend a forum like this and ask me to provide data about the measurable impact of projects in a state where you live. That is irresponsible.”
He further remarked that the openness of the session did not mean participants should ask what he termed “stupid” questions, stressing that those who raise their hands must come prepared with meaningful contributions.
Governor Otti also stated that his primary responsibility was to fulfil the promises he made during his campaign, rather than to engage in debates over statistical validation. When the journalist repeated his inquiry about the administration’s impact on ordinary citizens, the governor replied that his focus remained on delivering on his commitments to the people.
The exchange has since drawn attention, with observers noting the tension between demands for measurable accountability and the governor’s emphasis on implementation over data presentation.
