Obi, Jonathan Hold Strategic Talks on Nigeria’s Future Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described his private meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan as fruitful, noting that their discussions centred on the future direction of Nigeria.

Obi, who visited Jonathan alongside a delegation of prominent South-East leaders, said the engagement was part of his broader consultations with key stakeholders as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to intensify.

In a post shared after the meeting, he explained that their conversation was candid and focused on the urgent need to reposition the country towards unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.

He stressed that Nigeria’s current economic challenges, security concerns, and social divisions make it essential for leaders across different regions to collaborate in the national interest.

According to him, the country requires a leadership approach driven by competence, integrity, capacity, and compassion rather than personal ambition, adding that governance should focus on creating opportunities instead of merely distributing limited resources.

Obi also highlighted the importance of transforming Nigeria’s economic structure, advocating a shift from a consumption-driven system to one based on production by harnessing the nation’s human and natural resources.

Looking ahead, he described the 2027 elections as a crucial turning point, saying they should be viewed not just as routine political contests but as an opportunity to redefine the country’s path, improve education, support entrepreneurs, and ensure security and effective governance for citizens.

He was accompanied to the meeting by several Igbo leaders, lawmakers, and political allies from the South-East.
