Donald Trump has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s recent peace offer, which proposes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports, according to American media citing White House officials.
The proposal was reviewed during a high-level meeting in the White House Situation Room involving senior national security advisers. Among those present was Marco Rubio, who indicated that Trump is unlikely to accept the offer, particularly because it suggests postponing discussions around Iran’s nuclear programme.
The plan, which was submitted to Washington in recent days, is seen by some officials as an improvement on earlier expectations. However, concerns remain that agreeing to it could undermine Trump’s longstanding stance that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Rubio emphasised that any agreement must include firm guarantees that Tehran will not develop nuclear capabilities.
Trump has consistently maintained that any deal with Iran must be negotiated on U.S. terms and within a timeline determined by Washington. He has also stated that there is no fixed deadline for ending the ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, nor any immediate pressure to conclude the ceasefire or stalled negotiations.
