A Must Read for All — Enugu Leaders Hail New Book on Governorship Zoning

——– Says zoning has brought peace, progress and development in the state.

The Dome International Conference Centre came alive on Thursday, May 7, 2026, as political leaders, traditional rulers, academics and stakeholders gathered for the launch and presentation of the book titled “Zoning of Governorship Position in Enugu State: Evolution, Practice and Convention (1999–2023).”

The event commenced with an opening prayer delivered by Dr. Onyekachi Ugwu, while the Chairman of the Occasion, Igwe Ambassador Dr. Lawrence Agubuzo, formally welcomed representatives of the Governor of Enugu State, Senator Osita Ngwu, former governors, traditional rulers, commissioners and other dignitaries to the event.

Speaking during the ceremony, Igwe Agubuzo noted that the governorship position in Enugu State has rotated among the senatorial zones since 1999, a development he said has helped sustain peace and political stability in the state. He praised the authors for documenting the political evolution of zoning and encouraged participants to actively engage in the presentation.

One of the authors, Uchenna Cyril Anioke, who spoke on behalf of the authors, explained that the book was inspired by the rancorous and divisive nature of the 2023 governorship election in Enugu State. According to him, the authors embarked on extensive empirical research and archival investigations to properly document the history and development of zoning in the state.

Anioke stated that notable political leaders including Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo and Okwesilieze Nwodo confirmed that there was no formal agreement on zoning in the early years, as the state was deeply divided politically at the time.

He stressed that the publication was rooted in facts, evidence and objective analysis, adding that the book would serve as an important resource for students of history and political science within and outside Enugu State.

Also speaking at the event, the Founder and President of the Michael Okpara Entrepreneurial Development Centre, Hon. Chike Okoro, described the work as a major intellectual and historical contribution to political discourse in Enugu State. He noted that the authors had laid a solid foundation for understanding the past and promoting constructive discussions on zoning and governance.

“It is a must-read for all of us to appreciate what transpired, how we got to where we are and why we have peace that is not available in other states,” he stated.

The Chief Presenter, Dr. Cosmas Agbo, who was represented by Emeka Ukwuaba, commended the authors for documenting tangible records on zoning in Enugu State. He observed that the zoning arrangement has significantly reduced political rancour and contributed to peaceful coexistence in the state.

Among dignitaries present at the event were Igwe Samuel Asadu, former Governor Sullivan Chime represented by Sir Victor Atuanya, former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi represented by Douglas Nwagu, Commissioner for Information Malachy Agbo, and MD/CEO of Afia TV and Radio, Emeka Mba.

Others in attendance included traditional rulers, security representatives, academics, government officials and media personalities who graced the historic occasion.
