Vladimir Putin Proposes Russia Store Iran’s Enriched Uranium After Talks With Xi Jinping

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping discussed the possibility of Russia transporting and storing Iran’s enriched uranium during their summit in Beijing, the Kremlin disclosed on Thursday.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Putin brought up the proposal during talks with Xi on Wednesday, stressing that Moscow remains willing to assist in easing tensions linked to Iran’s nuclear programme.

Russia initially suggested in June 2025 that it could hold Iran’s enriched uranium and has since repeated the offer on multiple occasions as part of efforts to reassure global powers concerned about Tehran’s nuclear activities.

Moscow had previously managed Iran’s low-enriched uranium under the 2015 nuclear agreement, a role Putin has pointed to as proof that Russia possesses both the experience and facilities required for such an arrangement.

Peskov noted that Russia continues to engage with all parties involved and is prepared to sustain diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing disputes surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

However, the United States has rejected the idea of transferring Iran’s uranium stockpile to Russia, maintaining that any future agreement should instead focus on the complete dismantling of Tehran’s nuclear programme.

International estimates indicate that Iran currently possesses about 450 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, a level that could potentially be refined further into weapons-grade material.

As of Thursday, there had been no official response from either Chinese authorities or Tehran regarding the latest announcement from the Kremlin.
