Lagos Government Shuts Down Church, Hotels, Clubs Over Environmental Violations

The Lagos State Government has sealed 12 establishments, including a church, hotels, lounges, a nightclub and a gas station, for various environmental violations ranging from noise pollution and air pollution to non-compliance with regulatory directives.

The enforcement exercise was carried out on Monday by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in collaboration with the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) as part of ongoing efforts to enforce environmental laws across the state.

According to LASEPA, the affected establishments were shut down after repeatedly violating environmental regulations despite receiving warnings and abatement notices from the agency.

Among the establishments sealed was a Cherubim and Seraphim Church located on Olumuyiwa Jacobs Street, Aguda, Surulere, which was cited for noise pollution.

Also shut down was Westgate Arena Club at Apostolic Church Close, Olowora, over persistent noise pollution, while Golden Click Hotel on Cados Road, Baruwa, was sealed for failing to comply with directives issued by environmental authorities.

The enforcement team also closed 14:02 Lounge and Bar on Command Road, Aralamo Bus Stop, Ipaja, for noise pollution, while Kilo Hotel on Adeniyi Adefioye Street, Kilo, Surulere, was shut down for non-compliance with environmental regulations.

Max Lounge on Bode Thomas Street, Surulere, was sealed for both noise and air pollution, while The Hotel Macs on Enitan Street, Aguda, Surulere, was closed for failing to comply with regulatory requirements.

Other establishments affected during the operation include Hotel Bel Am on Agbebi Street, Ijesha, which was shut down over noise pollution, and Fecomillion Hotel on Salami Bashorun Street, Ijesha, Surulere, for violating environmental standards.

PetroSafe Gas Station on Ijesha Road was also sealed after it was accused of obstructing officials during the discharge of their duties and failing to comply with regulatory directives.

Similarly, Serena Hotel and Suites on Ashoge Street, off Cele Bus Stop, Surulere, was shut down for non-compliance, while CitiLounge on Mobe Street, Ishaga, was sealed over noise pollution.

Gariot, located on Ogunlana Drive, was also affected by the enforcement exercise after authorities cited it for obstructing officials and failing to comply with environmental regulations.

LASEPA said the operation was carried out on the directive of the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, as part of the government’s commitment to protecting residents from environmental hazards and maintaining a healthy living environment.

The agency reiterated its resolve to continue monitoring compliance with environmental laws and warned that establishments found violating regulations would face sanctions in accordance with the law.

LASEPA further urged business owners, religious organisations and hospitality operators to adhere strictly to environmental standards, particularly regulations relating to noise control, air quality and public health, to avoid enforcement actions.
