Morocco Stun Netherlands on Penalties to Reach World Cup Last 16

Morocco secured a dramatic place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a gripping 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey on Monday.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as Morocco’s hero, producing the decisive save to deny Crysencio Summerville in the penalty shootout before Ismael Saibari calmly converted the winning spot-kick to send the Atlas Lions through.

The victory sets up a last-16 clash against Canada in Houston on Saturday, as Morocco continue their impressive World Cup campaign.

The encounter had looked destined to end in Dutch victory after Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands the lead midway through the second half. The Liverpool forward, who recently suffered the heartbreaking loss of his unborn child, celebrated emotionally with teammates after finding the back of the net.

However, Morocco refused to surrender and snatched a dramatic equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time. Substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered an inviting cross into the box, where Issa Diop rose highest to power a header beyond Bart Verbruggen and force extra time.

The Atlas Lions had been the more threatening side for large periods of the contest despite the Netherlands enjoying greater possession.

Morocco nearly broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Neil El Aynaoui met Achraf Hakimi’s corner with a glancing header, only for Verbruggen to produce an outstanding reflex save. Moments later, the Dutch goalkeeper was called into action again, tipping Hakimi’s fierce long-range effort over the crossbar.

The physical intensity of the contest was evident throughout the first half, with referee Wilton Sampaio frequently called upon to calm tempers. Saibari escaped punishment after appearing to catch Jan Paul van Hecke with an elbow, while the Dutch defender later required treatment after suffering a head injury during a collision inside the penalty area.

The Netherlands’ best first-half opportunity came through Micky van de Ven, whose powerful strike from outside the area was brilliantly pushed over by Bounou.

The Dutch eventually found the breakthrough after manager Ronald Koeman introduced striker Wout Weghorst during the second half. The substitute immediately influenced proceedings, flicking on a long ball for Summerville, whose low cross was met by Gakpo, who threw himself at the ball to score.

With Virgil van Dijk leading the Dutch defence, victory appeared within reach until Diop’s dramatic stoppage-time header silenced the Netherlands supporters and extended the contest.

Morocco nearly completed the comeback in extra time when Soufiane Rahimi raced through on goal in the 96th minute, but Verbruggen produced another remarkable save to keep his side alive.

The match was eventually decided from the penalty spot. Although El Aynaoui struck the crossbar with Morocco’s opening kick, Bounou’s heroics ensured the Atlas Lions recovered. After denying Summerville with the decisive save, Saibari confidently dispatched the winning penalty to spark jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.

Morocco will now face Canada for a place in the quarter-finals, while the Netherlands bow out after falling short in one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout qualifiers.
