A commercial bus driver and his conductor have been apprehended by the Enugu State Police Command following a violent confrontation with traffic officers along the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway.
According to an official statement by the state police public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the incident occurred when operational officers attempted to stop the commercial vehicle for an apparent traffic violation.
In a deliberate bid to evade law enforcement and escape the scene, the driver rammed the vehicle directly into one of the performing officers, knocking him down and inflicting severe injuries.
Following the impact, the driver and his conductor escalated the confrontation by physically assaulting the incapacitated officer and forcibly disarming him of his assigned AK-47 service rifle. The suspects then fled the immediate vicinity with the weapon.
Upon receiving information regarding the assault and the theft of the firearm, law enforcement personnel initiated a swift tactical response. Operational teams successfully tracked down the fleeing suspects, leading to their arrest, the containment of the commercial bus, and the full recovery of the stolen police weapon.
The injured police officer was quickly transported to a nearby medical facility, where he is currently hospitalized and receiving intensive care for his injuries.
Enugu State Police Commissioner Kanayo Uzuegbu heavily condemned the violent conduct of the suspects, emphasizing that attacks on law enforcement officers performing their lawful duties will be met with severe legal consequences.
The state command confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and both suspects will face prosecution in a court of law immediately upon its conclusion.
