Taraba State Anti-Illegal Mining Task Force Shuts Down Remote Gold Site, Arrests Two Suspects

In a major breakthrough in the fight against environmental degradation and resource theft, the Taraba State Anti-Illegal Mining Task Force has successfully raided a remote illegal gold-mining camp located at Mayo Kam in Gantu village, situated within the Bali Local Government Area of the state.

The operation, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the apprehension of two suspected illegal miners and the recovery of several heavy-duty equipment.

Speaking to journalists in Jalingo, the Chairman of the task force, Mr. Emmanuel Jamu, explained that the successful crackdown was the culmination of several weeks of intense intelligence gathering and strategic planning.

He noted that security operatives had to navigate highly challenging and rugged terrain to access the extremely remote location where the illicit operations were being carried out.

While the sudden arrival of the task force prompted the majority of the illegal miners to flee into the surrounding thick forests, the security team was able to capture two suspects who were actively attempting to escape the scene.

In addition to the arrests, operatives seized a variety of specialized machinery and tools utilized in the illicit extraction process. The confiscated items included water pumping machines, heavy-duty generators, manual digging equipment, and materials explicitly meant for processing gold and other minerals.

Mr. Jamu used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to those still operating illegal mining sites across Taraba State, declaring that the law would eventually catch up with them. He emphasized that the task force remains undeterred and will maintain a persistent presence, ensuring that perpetrators face the full weight of the law regardless of where they hide.

To bolster these efforts, the chairman appealed directly to traditional rulers and community leaders to assist the task force by providing timely and credible information regarding suspicious mining activities in their domains.

This enforcement drive comes in the wake of a state-wide directive issued by the Taraba State Government on June 19, which suspended all mining operations due to mounting security concerns and authorized the task force to strictly enforce the ban.
