Governor Otti Applauds Landmark $145 Million Solar Manufacturing Plant Agreement for Abia State

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has enthusiastically welcomed a newly solidified agreement to establish a $145 million solar manufacturing facility in the state. He described the massive green energy project as a substantial milestone that will significantly accelerate local industrialization, generate job opportunities, and catalyze overarching economic development across the region.

The modern production facility is set to be constructed at Umuelele in the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area. The initiative is structured under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework bringing together the Abia State Government, a local firm named MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited, and a consortium of foreign technical partners from China.

While hosting the investment delegation led by their team lead, Dr. Oko Jaja, at the Government House in Umuahia, Governor Otti expressed profound satisfaction that the multi-million-dollar venture had successfully reached the crucial Final Investment Decision (FID) phase.

He reaffirmed that his administration is deeply committed to laying the groundwork for a highly collaborative and investor-friendly climate. To show direct state support, the governor confirmed that the government had already completed the task of acquiring and making available the required land space for the factory. He added that the state remains fully prepared to smooth over any potential administrative roadblocks to guarantee the smooth rollout of operations.

Governor Otti emphasized that the significance of the project extends far beyond the substantial incoming capital. He noted that the ripple effects of the manufacturing plant—such as bolstering the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), expanding technical skill acquisition for local youth, and establishing economic stability—are what the government values most.

According to briefings provided during the visit, preliminary site assessments have already been conducted by the Chinese technical specialists. The consortium intends to draw down the initial tranche of funding by September 2026, aiming for production to commence shortly after.

Aside from producing solar panels and structural components, the factory will function as a long-term hub for capacity development, providing the younger demographic in the area with relevant technical competencies in renewable energy.
