The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salary to its members.

The decision was taken at a congress of the union on Monday, September 7, 2026, following the failure of the university management to pay the complete salary owed to lecturers.

In a statement signed by the ASUU-UNIZIK Chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union said its action was in line with the standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council on non-payment of salaries.

The union said the resolution empowers its branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.

ASUU-UNIZIK said the incomplete payment of the August salary was not an isolated incident, noting that its members had experienced similar delays more than three times.

Consequently, the union directed all its members to immediately withdraw both academic and administrative services.

It said the strike would continue until all members receive their complete August salary.

The union appealed to the university authorities and the institution’s Visitor, President Bola Tinubu, to urgently intervene and ensure that the outstanding salaries are fully paid.

It also called for measures to prevent a recurrence of the situation.

When contacted for a reaction, UNIZIK Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, declined to comment on the development.

The strike is expected to affect academic and administrative activities at the university until the salary dispute is resolved.
