Lagos Announces Weekend Traffic Diversion for Independence Bridge Repairs

Motorists advised to plan journeys as urgent asphalt repairs run from October 16 to 18

The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversions on the Independence Bridge on Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works prepares to carry out urgent repairs scheduled for the weekend.

The repair work will begin on Friday night, October 16, and continue throughout Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the repairs would involve asphalt works on the bridge’s inbound and outbound lanes.

According to the commissioner, sections of the bridge will be partially closed one at a time to allow the work to proceed while maintaining access for motorists.

He said a lane would remain open to enable road users to reach their destinations during the repair period.

LASTMA to Manage Traffic

The state government said officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be deployed to manage traffic and minimise disruptions around the affected area.

Osiyemi urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time and consider alternative routes to avoid unnecessary delays.

He also appealed to road users to remain patient, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic management officials throughout the exercise.

The government said the measures were designed to reduce inconvenience while ensuring that the urgent repairs were completed as scheduled.
