The Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD) has endorsed former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its preferred candidate for the January 16, 2027 presidential election, claiming that Igbo people account for at least 25 per cent of voters in 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The group’s National Chairman, Chief Chekwas Okorie, announced the endorsement on Wednesday in Abuja, following consultations and an assessment of leading presidential contenders.
Okorie said the group considered the candidates’ records, integrity, competence and ability to manage public resources before choosing Obi. He expressed confidence that the former governor could attract support across ethnic and religious boundaries.
The IAD also announced former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as Obi’s running mate.
Speaking on the voting strength of the Igbo population, Okorie claimed that Igbo people constitute at least 25 per cent of voters in 31 states and the FCT, while accounting for more than 99 per cent of voters across the five South-East states. The figures were claims by the group and were not independently verified in the report.
He further said the organisation would intensify its mobilisation efforts through market associations, women’s groups, youth organisations and other networks to secure support for Obi ahead of the 2027 election.
The endorsement adds to the growing political activities and alliance-building ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
