Ensuring Yuletide Safety: FOSAD Calls Upon South-East Governors to Safeguard Lives and Properties During Christmas Celebrations

Press Release
25/12/2023

The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) is urging the governors of South-Eastern states to prioritize the safety of lives and properties throughout the Christmas holidays in the region.

The festive season symbolizes joy, unity, and communal gatherings. Yet, amidst these celebrations, ensuring security becomes a critical concern. In the South-Eastern part of Nigeria, where Christmas is fervently observed, the governors hold the responsibility to ensure the well-being of their constituents and protect their properties during this festive period.

This region, comprising Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states, has grappled with security challenges in the past, ranging from communal conflicts to kidnappings and armed robberies. Recognizing the significance of security, especially during festive periods, these governors must prioritize the safety of their people.

To bolster security during Christmas, the South-East governors should invest in upgrading security infrastructure. This involves deploying modern surveillance systems, establishing well-equipped police stations, and procuring advanced communication systems for security agencies. The aim is to enable swift responses to security threats.

Moreover, fostering robust partnerships with diverse security agencies is essential. Joint task forces should be formed to coordinate efforts and share intelligence, ensuring a comprehensive approach to security.

Embracing community policing initiatives is pivotal. Encouraging local residents to engage in neighborhood watch programs fortifies the relationship between communities and law enforcement while empowering citizens to take charge of their security.

Conducting public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on security measures during Christmas is imperative. Covering various media platforms will ensure a well-informed and security-conscious populace.

To deter criminal activities, intensifying security patrols and setting up checkpoints in strategic areas are crucial measures. These actions aim to prevent criminal movements and maintain a visible security presence.

Establishing emergency response systems, training rapid response teams, and securing borders are further steps to prepare for unforeseen incidents. Collaboration with neighboring state governments for coordinated border security is essential.

Leveraging technological advancements like surveillance cameras and drones enhances security, providing real-time information to agencies and aiding in crime prevention.

In conclusion, the commitment of South-East governors to ensuring security during Christmas is paramount. FOSAD believes that through infrastructure development, collaboration with security agencies, community engagement, and technological integration, the region’s insecurity can be significantly mitigated. Proactive measures are essential to safeguard constituents and foster a secure and joyous festive season in the South-East.

May the Christmas season bring brightness and may the resolve of South-East governors shine in providing a safe environment for all.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Signed,
Dr. Uzor Ngoladi
Secretary-General, FOSAD
