Governor Mbah Grants Full Scholarship to Abused Minor, Vows Zero Tolerance for Child Abuse

 

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has extended a comprehensive scholarship to Miss Happiness Nwafor, the young victim of severe abuse by her guardian, Mrs. Adachukwu Okafor, ensuring her education from primary to university levels. Additionally, the governor has committed to her ongoing rehabilitation to safeguard her future and well-being following the traumatic experience.

 

Expressing deep concern over the recurring incidents of child abuse, particularly among household helps, Governor Mbah emphasized the state’s unwavering stance against violence towards children. He affirmed that such heinous acts contradict societal norms and will be met with severe repercussions.

 

During the official handover of the rescued minor to the Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loan Board, the governor, represented by Commissioner Ngozi Enih, underscored the importance of providing opportunities for children like Miss Nwafor to realize their aspirations in life. He highlighted the state’s commitment to enhancing citizens’ welfare and dignity through various initiatives, including free and compulsory basic education.

 

In response, the Head of Administration at the Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loans Board, Mr. Peter Nkwuo, assured full compliance with the governor’s directive, acknowledging the agency’s responsibility to uphold its obligations.

 

Miss Happiness’ mother, Mrs. Nwanneka Anioke, expressed gratitude for the governor’s philanthropic gesture, emphasizing the immense relief felt by her family and others affected by the scholarship and rehabilitation initiatives.

 

The incident, which occurred on February 1, 2024, gained public attention through a viral video, prompting swift action from the Enugu State government in collaboration with Anambra State authorities to rescue the victim from her abusive guardian, Mrs. Adachukwu Okafor.
