Shops Shut in Uyo as Traders Exercise Caution Amidst Hunger Protest Fears: As the hunger protest gains momentum across the country, traders in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state,
are exercising caution by keeping their shops closed due to fears of potential
looting and attacks by miscreants.
The popular Itam Market and surrounding areas, typically bustling with activity,
were eerily quiet, with all shops remaining shut as of 9 am. Traders, still reeling from the experiences of the #EndSARS protest, where hoodlums looted numerous
shops, are opting to err on the side of caution.

Some traders, like Mr. Arinze, a dealer in curtains and window blinds, are hesitant to open their shops, fearing that looters may take advantage of the protest to steal goods. “Most of us didn’t open our shops because we’re afraid of looters,” he explained. “I’m just hanging around to see what’s going on. If a customer comes, I’ll open, sell, and close again.” Mr. Arinze observed that the usually busy road was deserted, with few people venturing out.
Another businessman, Mr. Francis, who owns an electronics shop along Ikot Ekpene Road, shared similar concerns. He recalled the devastating experience of the #EndSARS protest, where his shop was looted, and expressed his reluctance to open for business today. However, Mr. Francis also expressed his disapproval of the protest, believing that Nigerians brought the current hardship upon themselves by not voting for the right leaders. He criticized the electorate for prioritizing short-term gains over long-term benefits.
the security agents
Meanwhile, security agents, including the Army, have been strategically positioned around sensitive areas, such as the LG Show Room, which was previously looted during the #EndSARS protest. Their presence aims to deter potential looters and maintain order amidst the ongoing hunger protest.
