Azinge Ascends Throne as 14th Asagba of Asaba, Pledges Justice, Fairness, and Development for the Kingdom

On Saturday, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, was crowned as the 14th Asagba of Asaba, Delta State. His coronation followed his selection as the Asagba-designate during a meeting of the Asagba-In-Council and other community leaders after a thorough selection process by the five quarters of the kingdom on August 18, 2024.

The grand coronation ceremony took place at the Asagba palace, with notable figures in attendance, including former Delta State Governor Chief James Ibori, former Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, and Mr. Ngozi Okolie, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency. The traditional rites were performed by Chief Ubaka Attoh, the Onihe of Asaba (the kingdom’s traditional chief priest), who handed Azinge the traditional staff of office and the keys to the Ogwu-Uku.

In his speech, Azinge honored the late 13th Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien, whom he described as a father figure. He pledged to lead with justice and fairness, promising to uphold the legacy of his predecessor and to take the kingdom to greater heights. Azinge emphasized that the people of Asaba had placed their trust in him, and he vowed never to disappoint them.

The new monarch also committed to preserving Asaba’s cultural heritage, promoting unity, and encouraging inclusivity. He vowed to strengthen traditional institutions, maintain an open and accessible leadership style, and welcome constructive criticism while rejecting gossip.

Azinge reiterated his goal of establishing a federal university in Asaba and expressed his commitment to collaborating with the Delta State Government to further develop the state capital. Louis Edozien, while handing over the sacred authority to Azinge, praised his selection and expressed confidence in his wisdom, integrity, and leadership, wishing him a successful reign.
