Chidimma Adetshina Makes History as Miss Universe 1st Runner-Up

Chidimma Adetshina has made history as the first Nigerian to achieve a first runner-up position at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant held in Mexico City. This remarkable accomplishment represents a new milestone for Nigeria in the global beauty competition. The crown, however, went to Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, who emerged victorious over 124 contestants worldwide, succeeding Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua as Miss Universe 2024.

Chidimma’s journey to this stage celebrated Nigeria’s rich culture and heritage, particularly highlighted by her stunning national costume, “Nwanyi-Njiko,” designed by Abanobi Emmanuel Ifechukwu and Modela Couture. The ensemble symbolized unity, strength, and tradition, earning admiration globally. Among the top five contestants were representatives from Nigeria, Denmark, Thailand, Mexico, and Venezuela.

Her path to success was marked by resilience in the face of adversity. Before representing Nigeria, Chidimma competed in South Africa but withdrew amid a heated nationality dispute and xenophobic attacks. Born to a Nigerian father in South Africa, her selection as a Miss South Africa finalist in July ignited controversy over her heritage, leading to public backlash and government scrutiny. To protect her family, she left the competition.

After a 20-year absence from Nigeria, Chidimma was invited to represent her father’s homeland at Miss Universe, a decision that reignited her sense of belonging. Despite the scars from her South African experience, she expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their overwhelming support, which helped her heal. Her journey, filled with challenges, stands as a powerful testament to strength, determination, and cultural pride.
