Deputy Spokesman for the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese (APC-Benue), announced on Monday that the parliament is committed to passing the tax reform bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu. Addressing the press in Abuja, Agbese described the four executive bills as crucial catalysts for economic growth and expressed the lawmakers’ full support for them.
The proposed legislation includes the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill. These bills aim to create a comprehensive fiscal framework, establish clear legal provisions for taxes, and minimize disputes in tax administration. They also propose the replacement of the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act with the Nigeria Revenue Service, alongside the creation of a tax tribunal and tax ombudsman to streamline dispute resolution.
The bills, recommended by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms led by Taiwo Oyedele, were submitted to the National Assembly on September 3. However, the initiative has faced opposition from the 36 state governors, who have called for broader consultations and public input. Some governors have allegedly threatened to deny lawmakers re-election support if they continue backing the bills.
Despite this, Agbese maintained that the legislators prioritize the nation’s economic recovery and will not yield to external pressures. He emphasized the independence of the 10th Assembly, stating, “We are intellectually sound, progressive, and committed to making Nigeria work. We serve our constituents, not the governors, and will support any initiative that benefits those who elected us.”
Agbese assured that lawmakers had been given access to review the bills thoroughly and would ensure their passage with necessary modifications to enhance their effectiveness. He praised the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abass, highlighting the parliament’s resolve to approach the bills with patriotism and intellectual rigor.
