The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Council has approved a significant contract to support dry season farming in Abuja, marking a new chapter in agricultural development in the region. This announcement was made by Mr. Lawan Geidam, Mandate Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, following the council’s 10th meeting held on Monday.
The approved contract encompasses the procurement of vital agricultural inputs such as 250 metric tonnes of NPK fertilizer, 300 metric tonnes of urea, 310 knapsack sprayers, and 3,500 litres of liquid fertilizer, among other essentials. According to Geidam, this marks the first time the FCT administration has invested directly in dry season farming, aiming to provide critical resources for irrigation farmers.
“The rainy season has concluded, and this initiative is designed to encourage our farmers to embrace dry season farming, enabling year-round agricultural production through irrigation,” Geidam stated. The plan represents a shift from traditional rainfed agriculture to a model that ensures continuous farming activities throughout the year.
He commended the FCT Minister for endorsing the proposal, emphasizing its importance in expanding irrigation farming and bolstering food production within the territory. “This initiative will play a vital role in meeting the growing food demands of the FCT population,” Geidam added.
The project is anticipated to significantly enhance food security and maintain agricultural productivity during the dry season. It highlights a forward-thinking approach to the FCT’s agricultural strategy, promoting sustainability and supporting the livelihoods of local farmers.
