ICPC Tracks N7.5 Billion Projects in Enugu State to Ensure Transparency and Accountability

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced that it is currently monitoring Phase 7 of constituency and executive projects in Enugu State, which are valued at N7.5 billion. This was disclosed on Tuesday by Mr. Kweshe B. Asanarimam, the Assistant Chief Superintendent of Investigation for ICPC’s Enugu Office, during the project tracking process in the state.

The initiative to track constituency and executive projects, which the ICPC started in 2019, focuses on ensuring that government funds allocated to vital sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, water resources, and power are properly utilized. Asanarimam emphasized the importance of monitoring these projects to ensure accountability and transparency in government spending.

The tracked projects in Enugu include the supply of classroom furniture to Nkwogo Community Primary School in Akpugo, the construction of two classroom blocks at Colliery Primary School in Iva Valley and Uwani River Primary School in Enugu South, and the rehabilitation of the dilapidated Central Sewage Plant at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Ituku Ozalla. Other projects under scrutiny include a TETFUND initiative for the provision of 500 computer test halls and furniture at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), the construction of a new terminal building at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, and several other infrastructure projects.

Asanarimam highlighted the primary goal of this tracking exercise: to ensure that projects are executed according to their specifications, identify poorly executed projects, and hold contractors accountable. If any project is found to be substandard or abandoned, contractors will be required to return to the site or refund the funds paid. He also pointed out that the ICPC’s tracking effort covers 30 projects across the three senatorial zones of Enugu State, spanning appropriations from 2022 and 2023. The projects being monitored were either initiated by the federal government or attracted by National Assembly members representing Enugu constituencies.
