….As Stampedes in FCT, Anambra Claim Lives
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning against the uncoordinated distribution of palliatives and relief items across the country, citing recent tragic incidents as a cause for serious concern.
This warning follows a string of deadly events, the most recent being stampedes in Abuja and Anambra State. Earlier today, December 21, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, where a stampede broke out during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and elderly individuals. The incident resulted in the loss of 10 lives, with many others sustaining injuries.
Similarly, a palliative distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, organized by a philanthropist identified as Obi Jackson, ended in tragedy. Three individuals have been confirmed dead, while several others were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the chaos.
These incidents come just days after a catastrophic event in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a children’s funfair on December 18 claimed the lives of at least 35 children, leaving many others critically injured.
The IGP expressed deep concern over the rising trend of unorganized palliative distributions, which often result in overcrowding, confrontations, and tragic outcomes. He called on individuals, groups, and non-governmental organizations to collaborate with government agencies and security forces to ensure the safe and structured distribution of relief materials.
“Negligence in organizing these events is not only unacceptable but criminal,” the IGP emphasized, citing provisions of Section 196 of the Penal Code and Section 344 of the Criminal Code of Nigeria. He warned organizers to involve security agencies in such initiatives to prevent further tragedies and ensure public safety.
The IGP has directed Commissioners of Police in the affected states to conduct thorough investigations into the incidents for possible legal actions against those found culpable. He also urged the general public to prioritize their safety during such distributions to avoid further calamities.
In his statement, the IGP extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at creating a safer and more organized framework for aid distribution, working alongside relevant stakeholders to prevent future tragedies.
