Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, has responded to recent comments made by Dr. Peter Odili, former Governor of Rivers State. Wike expressed disappointment with Odili’s remarks, emphasizing that he had refrained from commenting until he personally read the statements in various newspapers.
Wike criticized Odili, whom he described as an elder statesman and father figure, for allegedly accusing him of trying to turn Rivers State into a personal estate during his governorship. Wike recounted that Odili had previously praised him for his achievements as governor, even stating that no other governor, including Odili himself, had matched Wike’s accomplishments.
Wike elaborated on his role in reviving Odili’s political relevance. He claimed that after Odili left office in 2007 and fell out of favor during Rotimi Amaechi’s administration, Wike’s tenure beginning in 2015 “brought him back to life.” According to Wike, his administration supported the establishment of PAMO University, ensuring scholarships for Rivers State students and funding the institution. He also alleged that he arranged for a mansion to be built for Odili and his wife, which Odili publicly appreciated at the time.
Wike accused Odili of inconsistency and hypocrisy, highlighting how Odili now praises the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara, after previously criticizing his candidacy. Wike questioned Odili’s motivations, pointing out the influence his family holds in Rivers State, including appointments for his wife, daughters, and himself. He sarcastically remarked that Odili appeared to be treating the state as a personal estate, contrary to his earlier accusations.
Wike also dismissed Odili’s past political ambitions, claiming he lacked the courage to pursue them. He criticized Odili for his alleged opportunism and attempts to remain relevant by associating with successive administrations. Wike concluded by asserting that he remains focused on his responsibilities in Abuja and is unbothered by distractions, warning Odili to avoid provoking further conflict.
