Peter Obi Expresses Concern Over Rising Kidnappings, Warns Against Destroying Nigeria

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, has expressed deep concern over the rising levels of crime, particularly kidnapping, in Nigeria. He described the situation as increasingly alarming and troubling, pointing to recent incidents of abductions and murders, including the kidnapping of two Catholic reverend sisters. The sisters were seized by unknown gunmen on Tuesday along Ufuma Road in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Obi, who previously served as the governor of Anambra State, also condemned the recent killing of the Manager of the College of Nursing Sciences in Ihiala. He lamented that no one in the country seems safe from the growing wave of kidnappings and killings. He pointed out that Nigerians across the nation are feeling the effects of insecurity, which is severely impacting multiple sectors, including agriculture, health, and education.

He highlighted the plight of farmers who are often forced off their lands, as well as the constant threat faced by teachers and healthcare workers, who are frequently abducted or killed. Recent incidents, such as the murder of the College of Nursing Sciences manager and the kidnapping of two reverend sisters in Anambra, are stark reminders of the dire situation, he said.

Obi emphasized that these individuals are contributing significantly to national development through their work in farming, education, and healthcare, particularly in rural areas. He condemned the kidnappings and killings, stressing that nothing can justify such violence. The former governor called on the government to take immediate and decisive action to tackle the issue, urging the use of all available security resources to end the menace and ensure the safe return of those in captivity.
