ESUT Unions Threaten Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Arrears, Set January 18 Deadline

Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) faces the possibility of an indefinite strike as all unions on campus have issued an ultimatum to the university’s management. These unions include the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU). In a circular dated December 17, 2024, issued by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) and addressed to ESUT’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, the unions announced their intent to begin a strike on Saturday, January 18, 2025, if their grievances are not addressed.

The unions have raised concerns about the failure of the university’s management to settle outstanding arrears owed to workers, a situation they claim has persisted for nearly three years under the current vice-chancellor’s administration. Despite multiple appeals to resolve the issue, the unions allege that their demands have been repeatedly ignored. The circular highlighted the unions’ patience over the years but stressed that the prolonged delay in settling their entitlements had exhausted their tolerance. They made it clear that the university must clear all outstanding arrears by the stipulated deadline to avoid industrial action.

As the January 18 deadline approaches, tension is mounting on campus. The unions maintain that paying the arrears is critical to ensuring industrial harmony and the smooth operation of academic activities. If the strike proceeds, it could significantly disrupt the academic calendar, impacting students, staff, and the institution’s reputation. While the unions remain hopeful for a resolution, they are resolute in their decision to strike if their demands are unmet.
