Oyomesi Threaten Legal Action Against Governor Makinde Over Bribery Allegations in Alaafin Selection

The Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers of Oyo, have taken a firm stand against Governor Seyi Makinde, threatening legal action over allegations of bribery during the selection of the new Alaafin. The kingmakers have expressed outrage, accusing the governor of making defamatory statements that damage their reputation. They have demanded concrete evidence to substantiate his claims.

Governor Makinde recently appointed Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin, ending a two-year vacancy following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III in 2022. The announcement was formalized on January 13, 2024, with the governor presenting Owoade with the staff of office.

During the coronation, Governor Makinde warned that anyone found guilty of bribery in the selection process would face legal action unless they sought forgiveness from the new Alaafin. He stated, “Those who sought to tarnish our tradition in Oyo will not be spared. The government will ensure they face the law unless they return to Kabiyesi to seek forgiveness.”

In response, the Oyomesi, represented by High Chiefs Yusuf Akinade, Wakeel Akindele, Hamzat Yusuf, and others, expressed their discontent in a letter addressed to the governor. Signed by their legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN), the letter titled “Curbing Public Statements Maligning The Integrity Of The Oyomesi” criticized the governor’s public remarks, urging him to refrain from making defamatory statements.

The Oyomesi emphasized that the court, not the media, is the appropriate venue for addressing allegations. They accused the governor of undermining their integrity and traditions, which they argued disrespects the sanctity of their role in the Oyo Kingdom. The letter warned against continued public attacks, highlighting their commitment to seeking redress through legal channels.
