Enugu PDP Chairman, Dr Chukwunweike Backs Mbah’s Reconciliatory Efforts, Vows Party’s Resurgence Ahead of 2027

In an exclusive, no-holds-barred interview on Freedom Square Live, hosted by veteran media icon Uchenna Cyril Anioke on Solid 100.9 FM Enugu on Saturday, February 1, 2025, Enugu State PDP Chairman Dr. Martin Chukwunweike provided an in-depth perspective on the ongoing reconciliatory efforts within the party. He stated unequivocally that Governor Peter Mbah, on assumption of office in 2023, has prioritized unifying party members, especially those who felt sidelined and subsequently defected to other political platforms.

Among the notable figures mentioned was Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, whom Chukwunweike identified as an example of a former PDP member open to dialogue. He opined that such engagements could lead to a win-win outcome, beneficial to the party’s overall consolidation and unity. He further affirmed that more efforts and consultations are ongoing, aimed at bringing back all estranged PDP faithful, emphasizing that sooner or later, the party will return to its position as the only party in Enugu State. He said he was not bothered if people felt he was ‘begging’ former members to return to the fold, insisting that it was the proper way to manage conflicts and disagreements.

Despite PDP’s position as an opposition party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the federal level, Dr. Chukwunweike noted with delight that Governor Mbah has been actively partnering with President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He highlighted the significance of fostering constructive engagements and relationships with the federal government, arguing that effective governance transcends party differences.

According to the party chairman, President Tinubu’s recent visit to Enugu and the commissioning of mega projects put in place by Governor Peter Mbah within a period of less than two years attested to the monumental gains of a working partnership with the federal government.

Dr. Chukwunweike further asserted, albeit vigorously, that Mr. President was so profoundly impressed that he boldly stated it did not matter which party the governor belonged to, emphasizing that Dr. Mbah is doing a fantastic job in Enugu State. He added that together, they could achieve great exploits for the good of Nigeria.

The PDP chairman assured party loyalists that strategic measures are in place not only to secure Governor Mbah’s re-election in 2027 but also to ensure that the election and victory will be seamless, clinical, and devoid of unnecessary litigations.

Addressing internal conflicts within the party at the national level, Dr. Chukwunweike acknowledged that, like many political organizations, the PDP has experienced power struggles in the aftermath of the 2023 elections. He advised party members against ambitions and interests that could weaken the party’s structure and called for unity.

Metaphorically, he likened the PDP’s resilience to that of a recovering patient, affirming that the party is regaining its strength.

Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that with support from PDP governors and a strong presence in the Governors’ Forum, the party would emerge stronger and more united.

He unequivocally described Governor Mbah as a transformative and disruptive leader, guiding the party effectively through challenging political terrain. Chukwunweike concluded by emphasizing the PDP’s commitment to overcoming its internal divisions and reclaiming its pivotal position as the dominant force in Enugu’s political landscape.
