Elon Musk’s X Settles Lawsuit, Pays Trump $10 Million Over Twitter Ban

Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), has agreed to pay Donald Trump $10 million to resolve a lawsuit dating back to the platform’s previous ownership. The lawsuit stemmed from the suspension of Trump’s account following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Trump was permanently banned from Twitter two days after the attack, during which his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol as Congress was certifying Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. At the time, the social media company, under its former leadership, justified the ban by accusing Trump of inciting violence through his posts. In response, Trump filed a lawsuit in July 2021, arguing that the suspension violated his First Amendment right to free speech.

A U.S. district judge dismissed the lawsuit in 2022, but Trump’s legal team swiftly appealed the decision. The appeal remained unresolved when Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in late 2022. After purchasing the platform, Musk rebranded it as X and reinstated Trump’s account a month later. Despite Trump’s reinstatement, Musk also inherited the ongoing lawsuit against the company.

Now, X has reached a settlement agreement with Trump, offering him $10 million to close the legal dispute. This decision comes despite Musk and his platform reportedly playing a significant role in Trump’s re-election campaign.

Musk has also taken on a prominent role within the Trump administration, leading the Department of Government Efficiency, where he is responsible for reducing federal government spending.
