A magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti, located in Ekiti State, has officially dismissed a defamation lawsuit that had been filed against well-known human rights activist Dele Farotimi. The case, originally brought forth by the police, was based on a complaint lodged by respected legal practitioner Afe Babalola in December 2024. The complaint alleged that Farotimi had made certain remarks that were considered defamatory toward Babalola.
During the court proceedings, Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ruled that the case be struck out. This decision came after the police prosecutor, Samson Osobu, informed the court that Afe Babalola had chosen to withdraw his complaint and was no longer interested in pursuing legal action against Farotimi. As a result, the prosecution saw no reason to continue with the charges, leading to the case being formally dismissed.
Farotimi’s legal representative, Kembi Adejare, confirmed that the defense team had received official notification regarding the decision to discontinue the case. He further noted that the defense had no objections to the withdrawal and fully agreed with the decision to drop all charges. The case’s dismissal brings an end to the legal dispute, clearing Farotimi of the defamation allegations.
