Canada Denies Visas to Nigeria’s Defence Chief and Military Officers, Sparks Outrage

The Canadian Embassy in Nigeria has reportedly denied visas to the country’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, along with several high-ranking military officials, despite their scheduled participation in an official engagement. The visa denial has sparked outrage, particularly from National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu, who strongly criticized Canada’s actions.

Speaking at the maiden annual lecture of the National Association of the Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) in Abuja on Thursday, February 13, 2025, Ribadu expressed his frustration over the situation. He condemned Canada’s decision, declaring that the country “can go to hell” for denying visas to Nigeria’s top military officers.

General Musa, while addressing the matter, shared his disappointment, revealing that he and his team had been invited to Canada for an event honoring war veterans and those injured in battle. However, while some of his team members were granted visas, others, including himself, were denied entry. He described the incident as a setback but also a lesson for Nigeria to reinforce its national strength and assert its sovereignty. “Every disappointment is a blessing,” Musa stated. “We were invited, yet half of the team got visas while the rest, including myself, were denied. It’s disheartening, but this serves as a reminder that Nigeria must no longer be taken for granted.”

In his reaction, Ribadu did not mince words, labeling the visa denial as an act of disrespect toward Nigeria and its military leadership. He urged the country to focus on self-reliance and strengthening its internal structures. Despite the controversy, Ribadu took a moment to commend General Musa’s leadership in addressing security challenges. He highlighted the improved collaboration among Nigeria’s security agencies, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to enhance national security.
