Afenifere Leader and Elder Statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Passes Away at 96

Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a highly respected politician and chieftain of Afenifere, has passed away at the age of 96. Reports confirm that he died peacefully at his home in Lekki, Lagos State. His family officially announced his passing in a statement released to the media on Friday.

The statement expressed deep gratitude for his long and selfless service to God, the country, and humanity. It confirmed that Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo took his last breath on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki residence. His departure marks the end of a significant era in Nigeria’s political landscape.

A seasoned nationalist, elder statesman, accomplished lawyer, and distinguished politician, Chief Adebanjo was widely recognized as a staunch advocate of true federalism. Throughout his life, he played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s political framework. As a former Organising Secretary of the Action Group and the National Leader of Afenifere, he remained unwavering in his pursuit of justice, fairness, and national progress.

He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy as a fearless advocate for truth and equity will continue to be celebrated.

Meanwhile, the family is currently making arrangements for his funeral and is in discussions with associates and relevant stakeholders across the country to ensure a befitting farewell.
