Abia Assembly Deputy Speaker Says No Distinction Between LP, PDP, and APC Members Amid Party Shifts

The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Okezie Augustine Nmeregini, has stated that there is no significant difference between members of the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), or the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the current state assembly under the present administration. He made this remark during an interview with the press on Tuesday evening, following the news that Hon. Roland Chinwendu had officially joined the Labour Party from the PDP.

Nmeregini recalled that at the start of the 8th Assembly, there were notable differences among members, but he had always believed that the situation would eventually settle. He expressed that now, it is hard to distinguish between members of the LP, PDP, and APC in the House.

Hon. Roland, representing Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency, had earlier been suspended by the PDP in Orono Ward 7, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, due to his public support for Governor Alex Otti. During the plenary session, Hon. Roland formally joined the Labour Party and was warmly received by fellow lawmakers.

The Deputy Speaker expressed no surprise at Roland’s decision to switch parties, describing it as a natural progression. He also hinted that more members might follow suit, urging those in the PDP and APC to align with the governor, given the significant progress the administration is making. Nmeregini welcomed Roland’s decision, emphasizing that the momentum of the current leadership was driving people to join the Labour Party.
