In a bid to restore safety and security along the busy Aba-Owerri Expressway, the governments of Abia and Imo states have launched a joint security operation. The initiative comes on the heels of a recent surge in criminal incidents targeting commuters, particularly with the Christmas season approaching and travel intensity increasing.
Following an emergency security meeting held at the Imo State Government House in Owerri, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State agreed to establish a unified security structure to tackle criminality along the corridor. The joint task force, composed of personnel from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Police, DSS, and other authorized security agencies, will commence full operations from December 5, 2025.
The joint team has been mandated to conduct round-the-clock patrols and sustained surveillance along the expressway, as well as adjoining bushes and vulnerable spots. To enhance intelligence gathering, the team will deploy high-grade drones and advanced surveillance tools to monitor, detect, and swiftly respond to suspicious activities.
Governor Otti commended Governor Uzodimma for the swift apprehension of the criminals responsible for the recent attack on his advance team, describing it as a testament to Imo State’s strengthened security architecture and leadership commitment.
Both governors reassured residents, travelers, and holiday returnees that the Aba-Owerri route is now under heightened protection. They warned that any individual or group found engaging in acts of criminality will face strict consequences under the law.
The joint initiative is a renewed commitment by both states to safeguard lives, protect economic activities, and ensure a secure festive season for all. With this collaborative effort, commuters can expect a safer and more secure journey along the Aba-Owerri Expressway during the holiday season.
