The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged incident involving Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member from Abia State, who is accused of abusing and threatening a dispatch rider in Abuja. The case, which has sparked widespread public outcry, reportedly involved Ikwechegh threatening to make the rider “disappear” after he asked for payment for his service. According to a police statement titled “Nigeria Police Reacts to the Humiliation of Dispatch Rider by Abia State House of Reps Member,” the FCT Police Command is actively investigating the matter, following the complaint filed by the dispatch rider, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
The police also issued a public reminder that no one should misuse the office or name of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to intimidate others, stressing the importance of the IGP’s impartial role in upholding justice.
The incident gained traction after a video surfaced online showing Ikwechegh allegedly berating the dispatch rider, asking, “Do you know where you are? Do you know who I am?” In the video, Abuwatseya responded simply by asking for his due payment: “I don’t want to know, just pay me and let me go.” Tensions escalated as Abuwatseya continued to assert his right to be paid, saying, “I did a job for you, and you have to pay me, sir.” Reports indicate that Ikwechegh refused to pay and allegedly called the rider “very, very stupid,” before making the alarming statement, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing would happen.”
The incident has sparked condemnation nationwide, with many Nigerians decrying the alleged abuse of power. Human rights activists have also voiced their concerns, demanding a thorough investigation and calling on the police to ensure accountability and justice in the case.
