ADC Accuses Tinubu Administration of Plotting to Destabilise Party and Undermine Opposition Coalition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised serious concerns over what it describes as a covert attempt by the administration of President Bola Tinubu to destabilize the party and undermine its growing role as a credible opposition force in Nigeria. In a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC claimed it had received reliable intelligence indicating that certain high-ranking officials within the current administration are behind this alleged plot, although no specific names were disclosed.

According to Abdullahi, the alleged plan involves summoning former ADC state chairmen from the Northeast and Northwest, along with key members of their executive teams, to a discreet meeting in Abuja. The intention, he claims, is to pressure, intimidate, or persuade these individuals into supporting a narrative designed to fracture the party’s unity and weaken its momentum. Abdullahi described these efforts as not merely political maneuvering, but acts of sabotage aimed at undermining Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

He stated that this interference is not being driven by any national interest or peace initiative, but rather by a desire to delegitimize the ADC’s new leadership and suppress the energy of a newly formed opposition coalition, which was formally declared on July 1 and unveiled to the public on July 2. The party insists that this growing coalition represents the hopes of millions of Nigerians who are disillusioned by the current administration’s failures.

The ADC went further to accuse the ruling party of resorting to its traditional tactics of political suppression, instead of focusing on governance and addressing the challenges Nigerians face. Abdullahi warned that such intimidation tactics are characteristic of authoritarian regimes and could push the country dangerously close to a one-party state.

He called on President Tinubu to take urgent action by reining in his appointees who are allegedly involved in this scheme, urging the President to demonstrate that he truly values democratic principles. Abdullahi reminded the administration that if the Goodluck Jonathan government had suppressed opposition as they are now attempting, the APC would never have had the opportunity to rise to power in 2015.

In conclusion, the ADC reaffirmed its commitment to democratic resistance, vowing to defend the ideals of fairness, justice, and political plurality using every constitutional and democratic means available. They called on Nigerians to stand firm against any attempts to silence alternative voices or dismantle democratic structures in the country.
