The Anambra State Government has strongly refuted claims made by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections and former governor of the state, regarding the mismanagement of ₦2.13 billion allocated as ecological funds.

Addressing the controversy through an official statement, state government officials clarified that the funds in question were fully accounted for and deployed towards executing urgent, high-impact environmental intervention projects across the state’s most vulnerable ecological zones.

The administration emphasized that Obi’s allegations were based on inaccurate interpretations of public financial records and failed to acknowledge the extensive erosion control works, drainage channelization projects, and land reclamation efforts actively being undertaken by the current leadership.

According to state representatives, Anambra remains one of the most ecologically fragile territories in Nigeria, severely threatened by active gully erosion complexes that constantly destroy homes, farmlands, and vital transport infrastructure.

The government maintained that ecological interventions require continuous, capital-intensive investments, and every disbursement received from the Federal Ecological Fund is subjected to rigorous administrative oversight, auditing procedures, and transparent procurement processes.

Furthermore, the state government urged public figures and political leaders to refrain from politicizing sensitive environmental challenges that directly affect the safety and livelihoods of citizens.

The administration reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to fiscal transparency, prudent resource management, and sustained environmental remediation, inviting independent assessors and civil society groups to physically inspect the ongoing and completed ecological projects across Anambra State to verify the authentic utilization of public funds.
