A Lagos State Mobile Court sitting at Bolade-Oshodi has sentenced 17 environmental offenders, including a supporter of Arsenal Football Club, to 17 month’s imprisonment with an option of fine for open defecation and public urination.

The convictions followed their arraignment for violating Lagos State environmental sanitation laws. The offenders were apprehended by operatives of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) during routine enforcement operations in the Oshodi area.

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a statement shared on his official X handle on Thursday. According to him, the individuals were brought before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade after being caught engaging in public urination and defecation.

Wahab reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental infractions, urging residents to make use of public conveniences and comply with environmental laws.

He therefore warned that defaulters would continue to face prosecution as the government intensifies enforcement efforts to maintain sanitation standards across Lagos.
