Breaking: Nigerian music icon Onyeka Onwenu has passed at 72

Renowned Nigerian singer, actress, and politician, Onyeka Onwenu, passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 72, after performing at an event on Banana Island, Lagos. She was said to have slumped after her performance at the birthday ceremony of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, and was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island. Although her family is yet to confirm the news, tributes have begun pouring in for the iconic artist.

 

Onwenu had a illustrious career spanning over four decades, releasing her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981, and went on to release numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love”.

She also acted in several Nollywood films such as “half of a yellow sun, lion heart” and won numerous awards for her contributions to music and film. She was recognized as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music and was honored with the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

 

Apart from her achievements in the entertainment industry, Onwenu also had a career in politics, serving as chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. She was appointed to these positions in 2013 and 2016 respectively.

Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian society have been recognized by various organizations, including being named one of the most influential women in Nigeria. Her legacy will be deeply missed.
