Citizen Journalism Gains Ground in Shaping Public Discourse — Anyianuka

Citizen journalism — once dismissed as informal reporting — is now emerging as a powerful force in shaping public discourse and holding governments accountable, experts say.

The increasing use of smartphones and access to various social media platforms has turned everyday individuals into frontline reporters, often breaking news before traditional media outlets respond.

Speaking on Beyond the Headlines, a socio-political program on Freedom Square TV, media analyst Chudi Anyianuka underscored the growing influence of citizen journalism on public opinion and policy-making, despite concerns over professionalism.

Citizen journalism no doubt plays its part on di-semminating of information. Public opinion is however very critical and you can’t overlook its impact on the shaping of government policies,” Anyianuka said.

While critics warn of misinformation and a lack of ethical or editorial standards, advocates argue that citizen journalism gives voice to marginalized communities and enables greater civic engagement.

Anyianuka acknowledged the shortcomings but emphasized that collaboration between traditional journalism and grassroots reporting could offer a solution. Training is also key: “There must be a balance,” he said. “To make citizen journalism viable, information must be verified.”

He further stressed the importance of language and communication, saying the way messages are delivered has a strong impact on how they are received. “Language is also critical. The way of communicating this information is important.”

As Nigeria’s media landscape continues to evolve, experts agree that citizen voices, when responsibly harnessed, will remain an indispensable part of the national conversations.
