A devastating rainstorm in Yala Local Government Area of Northern Cross River has led to the tragic deaths of three individuals and widespread destruction of property. The downpour, which was the first of the year, was accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms that caused severe damage to homes, infrastructure, and power lines in the region.
The storm had a particularly severe impact on the villages of Ezekwe, Okpodon, and Wanokom, where more than twenty houses were either partially or completely destroyed. Among the casualties were two women and one man, who lost their lives when their mud houses collapsed on them during the storm. The intense weather conditions also resulted in fallen trees and severed electricity cables, further exacerbating the devastation.
Dr. Fred Okem, the Chairman of Yala Local Government Area, expressed his distress over the disaster, especially considering that the local government had been making efforts to support the community in preparation for the farming season. He noted that ongoing projects, such as road rehabilitation, water borehole repairs, and the distribution of farm supplies, had been underway to ensure a smooth farming season. However, the unexpected storm has now set the community back significantly.
Dr. Okem highlighted the difficulty of rebuilding, citing the soaring cost of roofing materials as a major obstacle. Many residents, having lost their homes, are now left without shelter and have been forced to sleep outdoors, exposing them to harsh weather conditions and potential health risks. He warned that if immediate assistance is not provided, the community could face further hardships, including the outbreak of diseases due to unsanitary living conditions.
He made a passionate appeal to the federal and state governments, as well as non-governmental organizations and well-meaning individuals, to step in and assist those affected. He emphasized the urgency of rebuilding before the rains become more frequent and make construction efforts even more difficult.
One of the victims, Ochim Ogar from Wanokom village, recounted his heartbreaking experience. He shared that his wife was among those who perished in the disaster. According to him, when the rain began, his wife and children rushed inside their home for safety. However, as the storm intensified, the structure could not withstand the force of the wind, causing the walls to collapse. Tragically, his wife was crushed beneath the debris and died instantly, while their children managed to escape.
Now left alone to care for six children, Ochim Ogar fears for their future, as he lacks the resources to provide for them. He, along with many other affected residents, hopes that humanitarian aid will arrive soon to help them rebuild their lives and find shelter before the situation worsens.
