ENSIEC Releases Guidelines for LG Elections 2024:The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has released guidelines for the Local Government Council Elections set for September 21, 2024. This public notice, titled ENSIEC Guidelines for Local Government Council Elections 2024, is officially documented as Enugu State Notice No. 3, with further details outlined in E.S.L.N. No. 3 of 2024.

PUBLIC NOTICE: ELECTIONS IN ENUGU STATE – SEPTEMBER 21, 2024

Following a ruling by the High Court of Enugu State, delivered by Hon. Justice C.V.C. Ezeugwu on August 27, 2024, in the case of Aninri Local Government & 6 Others v. Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), the Commission has been directed to implement certain changes to its Guidelines and Amended Timetable. These adjustments are detailed in the official Gazette of Enugu State, published on May 17, 2024.

1. Official Notice regarding the Chairmanship and Councillorship Elections across all Local Government Councils in Enugu State.

2. June 3rd-14th, 2024: Political parties are requested to submit details regarding the conduct of their primaries, including the date, time, and location.

3. August 1st-19th, 2024: Party primaries will be held, along with the resolution of any disputes that may arise from them.

4. August 23rd-27th, 2024: Political parties are required to obtain nomination forms for the ENSIEC 7 and Councillorship elections during this period.

5. August 28th-30th, 2024: Political parties must submit the list of their nominated candidates to the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission headquarters at No. 3 Achi Street, Independence Layout, Enugu.

6. August 31st-September 6th, 2024: Candidate credentials will be verified, with Councillorship candidates being checked at the three Senatorial Headquarters and Chairmanship candidates at the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission headquarters, located at No. 3 Achi Street, Independence Layout, Enugu.

7. September 9th-10th, 2024: Lists of qualified and unqualified candidates will be returned to political parties using forms ENSIEC 3 and ENSIEC 4 for the Chairmanship and Councillorship elections, respectively, as noted in Enugu State Gazette No. 15, Vol. 33, dated August 28, 2024, E.S.L.N. NO. 3 of 2024.

8. September 11th-12th, 2024:

a. Political parties will replace any unqualified candidates.

b. Parties must submit the names of two agents per polling unit, along with their passport photographs, to the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission at No. 3 Achi Street, Independence Layout, Enugu. The photographs should be officially endorsed by the parties.

9. The campaign period for the election will begin on September 7th, 2024, and end on September 19th, 2024, at 6 pm. During this time, candidates and their parties must conduct their campaigns in accordance with the guidelines set by the Commission, which may be updated as needed.

10. 21st September, 2024 Voters’ accreditation and voting by Open Secret Ballot System in the hours of 8.00am and 3.00pm.

11. If necessary, a runoff election for the Chairmanship and/or Councillorship positions will be held on September 28th, 2024.
